Mount Rushmore National Memorial
by the National Park Service

Mount Rushmore is a memorial to the growth and development of the United States of America. The sculptured busts of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln represent the American character, its ambitions and visions as a nation. The primary resource at Mount Rushmore is the granite sculpture itself, but also of interest is the Sculptor's Studio built under the direction of Sculptor
Gutzon Borglum in 1939. Unique plaster models and tools related to the sculpting process are displayed in the studio.

Other resources at the memorial include the flora and fauna representative of the Black Hills environment and the unique geological formation of the mountain and adjacent peaks.

1998 marks the completion of ten years of redevelopment work at the Memorial. The park's new Visitor Center opened on June 15 and the Presidential Trail which runs along the base of the mountain was completed in early July. In August, records will be put into the Hall of Records, completing, at least in part, one of Gutzon Borglum's dreams for the monument. Throughout the summer, special events will celebrate the completion of the redevelopment, including a Grand Celebration of the completion of the facilities on August 25.
