Top 10 Breweries

1. Deschutes Brewing – Bend, Oregon
Gary Fish established the Deschutes Brewery & Public House as small brew pub in 1988 in downtown Bend, Oregon and named it after the wild & scenic Deschutes River. The brewery expanded in 1993 and now has a brewing facility with two brew houses so it can brew enough beer to distribute beyond Bend. The brewery is one of the top breweries in the Northwest and distributes its beer in thirteen western states. Bend's original brew pub, Deschutes Brewery still brews most of the beer it pours at the pub on the 12-barrel system where it all began.

Its most popular beers include the Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Obsidian Stout, Bachelor ESB, The Abyss, and Cascade Ale. Obsidian Stout is ranked #89 on BeerAdvocate's Top 100 American Beers list. Its beers have won numerous awards at various beer competitions. One of the more notable awards came in 2002 when the Deschutes Brewery won two medals at the Brewing Industry International Awards--a gold for the Mirror Pond Ale and a silver for the Black Butte Porter.

2. Sprecher Brewing – Glendale, Wisconsin
Sprecher Brewing Company was founded in 1985 by Randel Sprecher, formerly a brewing supervisor at Pabst Brewing Company. From 1985 to 1994, the brewery was located at 730 W. In 1994, Sprecher purchased its current building, located at 701 W. Glendale Ave., a former elevator car factory. The new, larger brewery will allow the company to continue growing, and allow more people to enjoy all of Sprecher's fine products which include: Abbey Triple, Black Bavarian, Hefe Weiss, Pub Ale, Special Amber.

4. August Schell Brewing, - New Ulm, Minnesota
There’s an old saying “Never trust a brewery under 140 years old." Okay, it’s our old saying, but it’s true, nonetheless. Schell's is the second oldest family-owned brewery in the country. While microbreweries and beer trends have come and gone, we’ve been right here, tirelessly brewing fine lagers and ales for the people who appreciate them. Visit our brewery grounds and you’ll see deer, roaming peacocks, gnomes, not to mention barrel after barrel of the finest beers imaginable. That’s just who we are, as it has been for over a century.  Products include: Firebrick, Pilsner, Pale Ale, Caramel Bock, Zomerfest and Snowstorm.

5. Maui Brewing - Maui, Hawaii
At our Kahana location, we handcraft our beer in small 7 barrel batches. Our Brewmaster equates food taste and creativity of accomplished chefs with those of being a brewmaster. "A brewer or chef must balance the science, mechanics, and most importantly, the flavor, to achieve the goal of creating fine food or beer." These inspirations of both Chef and Brewmaster are evident at Maui Brewing Co. We have recently expanded our production facility with a second location in Lahainatown where we have installed a 25-barrel STI Brewhouse and Cask Brewing Systems automatic canning line.

With more than 29 medals at various Regional, National, and International competitions in just the last two years, Maui Brewing Co. handcrafted local Hawaiian beers are officially among the best in the world. Our products are exclusively and locally produced on the island of Maui. We are, and will always be, "Made in Hawaii". Our packaged product is NOT brewed in the mainland and shipped to Hawaii by boat. We are a "Fiercely Local" company.

6. Anderson Valley Brewing – Boonville, California
Located in Boonville, California, in scenic, Mendocino County, Anderson Valley Brewing Company (AVBC) opened the doors to its brew pub in late 1987. Since then, Anderson has built a new facility, and now brews their  world-class ales in copper vessels salvaged from two defunct German breweries. They carefully craft their world-class ales using only the finest ingredients; premium malted and roasted grains, hops, yeast, and pristine Boonville water straight from their own unique aquifer, and  never heat pasteurize or sterile filter our beers.  Products include:  Boont Amber Ale, Hop Ottin' IPA, Poleeko Gold Pale Ale, Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, Belk's ESB, Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale, Deep Enders Dark Porter, and High Rollers Wheat Beer, and Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema.

7. Terrapin Beer Company - Athens, Georgia
Terrapin Beer Company was founded by Brian "Spike" Buckowski and John Cochran. The two men actually wanted to develop their own brewery, in 1998, before they had their own beer. After finally developing a beer the two were contemplating names when Buckowski, a Grateful Dead fan, mentioned Terrapin. The name comes from "Terrapin Station," which is a Grateful Dead album. After three years of talking to bankers and investors to no avail, Spike and John realized the only way to start Terrapin Beer Company was to begin as a contract brewery.

It released its first beer, the Terrapin Rye Pale Ale, in Spring 2002 at the Classic City Brewfest. Six months later this beer, which was sold only in Athens, Georgia, was awarded the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. With demand for Terrapin growing daily, the Rye Pale Ale was soon made available to beer fans in Atlanta, Georgia as well. Soon after, Terrapin was chosen by producers of "Blue Ribbon" on Turner South to be featured on a TV special about breweries in the South. The viewers of this show voted Terrapin as the Best Brewery in the Southeast by an overwhelming margin of 72%.

8. Tallgrass Brewing - Manhattan, Kansas
The decision to found Tallgrass Brewing Company was made by Jeff Gill and his wife Tricia on April 8, 2006. Tricia had asked Jeff THAT question: “What do you want to do with the rest of your life?” Jeff had been thinking about that exact question quite a bit. “I want to start a microbrewery!” Jeff answered. He had been an avid homebrewer for six years and loved to brew beer that people enjoyed. At that point, he and Tricia made a commitment to start a new microbrewery in Kansas. It would mean moving from where they lived at the time, Jeff giving up his career as geologist, and Tricia changing jobs.

When the spring of 2007 rolled around, Jeff was ready to speak with friends and family about investing in their dream to start Tallgrass Brewing Company. With the money raised and a lot of hard work, the brewery was built just off of Green Valley Road at the edge of the Flint Hills. A beautiful copper-clad brewhouse arrived in June 2007 and the first beer was brewed in August 2007. Our beer is now available on tap and in bottles across Kansas.

9. Atlanta Brewing - Atlanta, Georgia
Founded in 1993, the award-winning Atlanta Brewing Company (ABC) is the oldest operational craft brewery in the state of Georgia. In late 2005 new ownership and management was welcomed to the brewery: Robert Budd, serving as President, and Dave Weil - Director of Operations, joined longtime ABC Brewmaster Dave McClure. Sales Director Steve McLendon joined the ABC staff in July of 2007.

Red Brick Ale was the first beer brewed by ABC and remains its flagship brand; it is available year round, as are Peachtree Pale Ale and Red Brick Blonde. In 2005, Concentrics Hospitality asked ABC to collaborate with Chef Todd Rushing on a signature beer for their renowned Atlanta restaurants. The result was Numbers Ale, which promptly won a Best of Atlanta award from local weekly paper Creative Loafing. ABC currently offers a traditional, German-style Hefeweizen in the summer months, and a double-chocolate, Oatmeal Porter in the winter.
